A tribute to an icon: Julien d’Ys

When I’m not free, I’m bad at it. When people trust me, I’m very good.

This month’s icon is someone who pushes the boundaries of hair artistry like no other.

Having worked with him on numerous occasions, founder Paul Windle invited our very own top stylist Sergio Renis to share a few words:

“Renowned for hair as his true medium, Julien’s vision never stays within its limits – encompassing art, painting, makeup, photography and more, it transcends hairdressing as we know it. His true being is that of a contemporary artist. Beauty. Passion. Fantasy. Storytelling. It embeds everything that I’ve always believed in hairdressing. His work is iconic, and, like Christiaan, he was one of the first to start the session stylist movement in the early 80s.For over two decades Julien has been responsible for the Comme des Garcons hair looks. D’Ys is a visionary romantic with a twist of subversive geniality, and an amazing person to work with.”

D’Ys is more suited to the term “hair artist” than hairstylist and is very well known for his unconventional approach (d’Ys was the first to purposefully make hair look dirty, using potions of grease, vodka, clay or powder).

D’Ys was the one responsible back in the 80s for the chop of Linda Evangelista’s long hair, no doubt taking the supermodel’s career to the next level. His work with Peter Lindbergh also helped to launch the likes of Christy Turlington, Naomi Campbell and Cindy Crawford into the limelight.
